Read-aloud books for the projector

425 free books to read together on the big screen, with the word being said lit, a pace you choose, pictures where the book has them and questions to talk about at the end.

Choose a book, press Full screen, then Read to me or turn the pages yourself. Every book is split into pages of big type, and the voice is your own computer's, so there is nothing to install. Books run from decodable first books to classic tales and true books for older readers.

Books with discussion questions

These 30 have a page of their own, with something to ask before you start, questions to talk about afterward and what to listen for in the answers.

Every book, by grade

The library numbers its levels from 0 to 18. Levels 0 to 2 are decodable first books, level 3 is kindergarten, levels 4 to 6 are first grade, and from there it is one level a grade: level 7 is second grade, up to level 13 for eighth. Levels 14 to 18 are beyond grade 8. A level is a guide, so look at a page before you commit the class to a book.

Questions

Are the books free, and do students need to sign in?

Yes, free, with no sign-in and no ads. Project a book, or send the link and let students open it on their own screens.

Where do the books come from?

They are Peabody's own library: stories, true books and retellings of classic tales, written or retold for Peabody at reading levels from 0 to 18. Only the library's gentle and spooky books are here, and each is marked, so you can pick for your class.

How does the voice work?

Read to me uses the speaking voice already on your computer or tablet, one sentence at a time, and lights the word it is saying where the voice reports it. Slow, Steady, Normal and Quick set the pace. If there is no voice, the pages still turn and you can read aloud yourself.

How do I turn the pages?

Arrow keys or Page Up and Page Down, a clicker that sends those keys, the Back and Next buttons, or a tap on the page: the right side goes on and the left third goes back.

Why do only some books have discussion questions?

30 books have a page of their own with questions to talk about and what to listen for in the answers, written for that book. Every other book can be read here too, with three questions that fit any book at the end.
