Five Needs, One Dog as a read-along for the projector: 8 pages, 967 words, level 13, grade 8.
Dev was thirteen when his family brought home Moss, a gray, long-legged dog from a rescue. By the end of the first week, Dev had noticed something uncomfortable: he had been loving Moss without really knowing what Moss needed. So he copied a framework from an animal charity's website, which says that every pet owner must provide five things: a suitable environment, a suitable diet, the ability to behave naturally, company that suits the species, and protection from pain, injury and disease. He drew five columns on a sheet of paper and wrote Moss's name across the top. The same charity adds a warning that the needs of each type of pet are very different, so an owner has to learn them for the animal in front of him.

Whose voice is it?
Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.
Do students need an account?
