Her father went down the boat steps on a stretcher made from the door of the oil room, cursing in a low and steady murmur that Tamsin Hale had never heard him use. It was the fourteenth of October, 1893, and the Hales had kept the light on Harrow Rock for six years, nine miles out from the coast of Maine. Captain Josiah Hale had never missed a single night until a wet stair on the gallery rail laid him on his back with the bone of his left leg broken below the knee. Mr. Dyer, who delivered the mail and the flour, steered his dory in and gave Tamsin a look that was meant to be encouraging. "Three days," he said. "The doctor sets the bone, and I row back."

Whose voice is it?
Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.
