One summer, a great flood swept a young mongoose out of the burrow where he lived with his mother He was carried, kicking and clucking, along a roadside ditch, until the water finally deposited him, half drowned and soaking wet, in the middle of a garden path. His name was Rikki-tikki-tavi, because of the peculiar war cry he gave whenever he was excited. He resembled a small cat in his fur and tail, and a weasel in his head and his habits, and his eyes were a bright, restless pink. He could also scratch himself anywhere he pleased, with any leg, front or back, which was a great talent.

Whose voice is it?
Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.
