In August of 1914, a ship called the Endurance sailed out of England with a crew of twenty-eight men. Their leader was Ernest Shackleton, an explorer who dreamed of being the first to cross the continent of Antarctica on foot. The ship was strong and carried dogs, sleds, and enough supplies for a very long trip. Its name came from the motto of Shackleton's family, which said that by endurance we conquer. Nobody on board could have guessed how much that word would matter. The expedition had been planned for years, and newspapers across the country followed the preparations with great excitement and admiration.

Whose voice is it?
Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.
Do students need an account?
