About Tim Taps
A ten-page first book built from three lines that keep coming back: Tim taps a pan, Dad naps, Tim taps again. The repetition lets beginning readers join in by the second page, and the last page is a small surprise.
Tim taps a pan. Tap, tap, tap! Dad naps. Then Dad wants to tap, too.
Before you read
Show the cover words and ask what a pan is for. Tell the class to listen for the word that comes back on every page, and to say it with you when you point to it.
Words to preview
- tap
- hit softly
- pan
- for cooking
- naps
- sleeps a bit
Questions to talk about
- What does Tim tap on?Listen for: A pan. Ask a child to find the word pan on the page and put a finger under it.
- What does Dad do while Tim taps?Listen for: Dad naps. If a child says Dad is asleep, accept it and ask which word on the page says that.
- What changes on the last page?Listen for: Dad taps a pan too. It is the only page where Dad is not napping, so the story turns there.
- Why do you think Dad wants to tap in the end?Listen for: Any reason that fits: it looked like fun, the noise woke him, he wanted to join in. Ask what on the pages made them think so.
Questions
How long does Tim Taps take to read aloud?
It has 10 pages and 31 words, so about a minute at the Steady pace and a little less at Quick. If you stop to talk on the way, plan for more.
What reading level is Tim Taps?
Level 0, an early reader. The library numbers its levels from 0 to 18 and puts the level of a book on its cover; levels 0 to 2 are decodable first books, below any school grade. A level is a guide for choosing, so look at the pages yourself.
Whose voice is it?
Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.
Do students need an account?
No. Nothing is asked of anyone and nothing is sent to us. Project the page, or share the link and let students open it on their own screens.
Where does this book come from?
It was written for Peabody's library. It is not copied from a published book.
Nothing you do here is sent to us. The voice is your browser's own. No sign-in, no ads.
