The Clock That Struck Thirteen: read-along

The Clock That Struck Thirteen as a read-along for the projector: 23 pages, 2937 words, level 13, grade 8.

The clock in the Founders' Tower at Ashgrove School had struck twelve at every midnight for a hundred and forty years. On the second Thursday in March, it struck thirteen. I did not hear it, being a sound sleeper and a person of regular habits, but Jun did, and Jun does not make mistakes about sounds. This is my account of the second case of the Locked Room Club, written up in the usual form and with the usual promise. Every clue that solved it is set down on these pages before the solution, so that a careful reader may arrive at the answer a little ahead of Ravi, which is not difficult, and perhaps even a little ahead of me, which is considerably harder.

The tower clock strikes thirteen at midnight, and by morning the headmaster's study is bolted from the inside, with the window open and the founder's chronometer gone. The Locked Room Club has the notes, the timeline and five suspects, and every clue that solves it is on the page first.

Whose voice is it?

Your browser's own. Read to me uses a speaking voice already on the computer, so it sounds like that computer and works without a sign-in. Voices differ: some light each word as it is spoken, and some do not, in which case the highlight follows a steady pace instead. Some browsers use an online voice; if yours does, the browser, not us, sends the words of the page to its speech service. If no voice is installed, turn the pages and read it aloud yourself.

Do students need an account?

No. Nothing is asked of anyone and nothing is sent to us. Project the page, or share the link and let students open it on their own screens.

Where does this book come from?

It was written for Peabody's library. It is not copied from a published book.
