Pumpkin theme for toddlers: a week of activities
A pumpkin theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the pumpkin theme with toddlers
- Arrival and free play on the floor.
- Sing “Ring Around the Rosie” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
- Hold and pass something real for the week (pumpkin), and say its name.
- Snack: a toddler-safe version of no-bake pumpkin pie cups (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
- Outside: a short walk looking for vine.
- Read Meg and the Seed on laps, pointing and naming.
- Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.
Pumpkin circle time
- Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
- Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
- Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
- Sing: Ring Around the Rosie.
- Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).
Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.
Pumpkin theme books
- Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A seed that will not hurry, like a pumpkin all summer long.
- At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Where pumpkins grow, and who lives there.
- The Big Truck (level 2, free on peabody.kids): A truck in the mud, like the one that carries the pumpkins in.
- The Enormous Turnip (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a vegetable so big it takes everyone to pull it up.
Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.
Pumpkin craft: Pumpkin seed counting card
You need (3): orange card, round seed stickers, crayons.
- Draw a big pumpkin shape on the card (a grown-up can draw it).
- Stick on seeds: two for twos, five for threes, ten for fours.
- Count them out loud and write the number.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.
