Pumpkin theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A pumpkin theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the pumpkin theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “How does a pumpkin start?” and sing “ring around the rosie”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: pumpkin seed counting card.
  4. Snack: No-Bake Pumpkin Pie Cups.
  5. Outside: pumpkin patch walk.
  6. Read Meg and the Seed, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter P picture page.

Pumpkin circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “How does a pumpkin start?”
  4. Sing: Ring Around the Rosie.
  5. Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

Pumpkin theme books

  • Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A seed that will not hurry, like a pumpkin all summer long.
  • At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Where pumpkins grow, and who lives there.
  • The Big Truck (level 2, free on peabody.kids): A truck in the mud, like the one that carries the pumpkins in.
  • The Enormous Turnip (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a vegetable so big it takes everyone to pull it up.

Pumpkin craft: Pumpkin seed counting card

You need (3): orange card, round seed stickers, crayons.

  1. Draw a big pumpkin shape on the card (a grown-up can draw it).
  2. Stick on seeds: two for twos, five for threes, ten for fours.
  3. Count them out loud and write the number.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.

Pumpkin song: Ring Around the Rosie

The words

Ring around the rosie, A pocket full of posies, Ashes, ashes, We all fall down.

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Pumpkin snack

No-Bake Pumpkin Pie Cups from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Swap: Graham crackers → gluten-free graham-style crackers.

Letter P activities

PpP is for pumpkin. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Twos: the picture page only; color it and say the word.

Outside activity: Pumpkin patch walk

Set balls or cones around the yard as pumpkins. Walk, tiptoe, then hop to each one.
