Pumpkin theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities

A pumpkin theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the pumpkin theme with 3 and 4 year olds

  1. Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
  2. Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “How does a pumpkin start?”, sing “ring around the rosie”, then Meg and the Seed.
  3. Centers, with the craft at one table: pumpkin seed counting card.
  4. Letter P: trace it once, then hunt for P around the room.
  5. Snack: No-Bake Pumpkin Pie Cups, with children pouring and counting.
  6. Outside: pumpkin patch walk.
  7. Rest, then a longer read-aloud: The Enormous Turnip.

Pumpkin circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “How does a pumpkin start?”
  4. Sing: Ring Around the Rosie.
  5. Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).

Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.

Pumpkin theme books

  • Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A seed that will not hurry, like a pumpkin all summer long.
  • At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Where pumpkins grow, and who lives there.
  • The Big Truck (level 2, free on peabody.kids): A truck in the mud, like the one that carries the pumpkins in.
  • The Enormous Turnip (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a vegetable so big it takes everyone to pull it up.

Pumpkin craft: Pumpkin seed counting card

You need (3): orange card, round seed stickers, crayons.

  1. Draw a big pumpkin shape on the card (a grown-up can draw it).
  2. Stick on seeds: two for twos, five for threes, ten for fours.
  3. Count them out loud and write the number.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Pumpkin song: Ring Around the Rosie

The words

Ring around the rosie, A pocket full of posies, Ashes, ashes, We all fall down.

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Pumpkin snack

No-Bake Pumpkin Pie Cups from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Letter P activities

PpP is for pumpkin. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Threes and fours: trace P and p once, then find P in the room and in the book.

Outside activity: Pumpkin patch walk

Set balls or cones around the yard as pumpkins. Walk, tiptoe, then hop to each one.
