Camping theme for toddlers: a week of activities

A camping theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the camping theme with toddlers

  1. Arrival and free play on the floor.
  2. Sing “All Through the Night” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
  3. Hold and pass something real for the week (tent), and say its name.
  4. Snack: a toddler-safe version of no-bake s'mores (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
  5. Outside: a short walk looking for camp.
  6. Read Not Yet, Ted on laps, pointing and naming.
  7. Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.

Camping circle time

  1. Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
  2. Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
  3. Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
  4. Sing: All Through the Night.
  5. Read: Not Yet, Ted (level 3).

Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.

Camping theme books

  • Not Yet, Ted (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Bedtime, for the night-outside talk.
  • Go, Go, Go (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: going places.
  • The Little Lantern (read aloud, level 6): A read-aloud: a small light at night.
  • The Moon Follows Me (read aloud, level 6): A read-aloud: the moon over the road.

Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.

Camping craft: Paper tent

You need (4): a card folded in half, crayons, a paper flap door, glue stick.

  1. Stand the folded card up as a tent.
  2. Color it and glue on the door.
  3. Draw who is sleeping inside.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.

Camping song: All Through the Night

The words

Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee All through the night; Guardian angels God will send thee All through the night. Soft the drowsy hours are creeping, Hill and vale in slumber steeping, I my loving vigil keeping All through the night.

Welsh air, English words by Harold Boulton, 1884; public domain. From Top 20 lullabies with lyrics.

Camping snack

No-Bake S'mores from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Swap: Graham crackers → gluten-free graham-style crackers.

Letter C activities

CcC is for camp. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Infants and toddlers: skip the trace page; show the picture page and say the word.

Outside activity: Blanket camp

Drape a blanket over a table or a rope as a tent. Take turns inside with a flashlight and a book.
