Camping theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities

A camping theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the camping theme with 3 and 4 year olds

  1. Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
  2. Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “What would you pack to go camping?”, sing “all through the night”, then Not Yet, Ted.
  3. Centers, with the craft at one table: paper tent.
  4. Letter C: trace it once, then hunt for C around the room.
  5. Snack: No-Bake S'mores, with children pouring and counting.
  6. Outside: blanket camp.
  7. Rest, then a longer read-aloud: Go, Go, Go.

Camping circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What would you pack to go camping?”
  4. Sing: All Through the Night.
  5. Read: Not Yet, Ted (level 3).

Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.

Camping theme books

  • Not Yet, Ted (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Bedtime, for the night-outside talk.
  • Go, Go, Go (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: going places.
  • The Little Lantern (read aloud, level 6): A read-aloud: a small light at night.
  • The Moon Follows Me (read aloud, level 6): A read-aloud: the moon over the road.

Camping craft: Paper tent

You need (4): a card folded in half, crayons, a paper flap door, glue stick.

  1. Stand the folded card up as a tent.
  2. Color it and glue on the door.
  3. Draw who is sleeping inside.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Camping song: All Through the Night

The words

Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee All through the night; Guardian angels God will send thee All through the night. Soft the drowsy hours are creeping, Hill and vale in slumber steeping, I my loving vigil keeping All through the night.

Welsh air, English words by Harold Boulton, 1884; public domain. From Top 20 lullabies with lyrics.

Camping snack

No-Bake S'mores from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Swap: Graham crackers → gluten-free graham-style crackers.

Letter C activities

CcC is for camp. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Threes and fours: trace C and c once, then find C in the room and in the book.

Outside activity: Blanket camp

Drape a blanket over a table or a rope as a tent. Take turns inside with a flashlight and a book.
