Construction theme for toddlers: a week of activities
A construction theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the construction theme with toddlers
- Arrival and free play on the floor.
- Sing “London Bridge Is Falling Down” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
- Hold and pass something real for the week (build), and say its name.
- Snack: a toddler-safe version of hamburger cookies (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
- Outside: a short walk looking for block.
- Read Ben and the Blocks on laps, pointing and naming.
- Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.
Construction circle time
- Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
- Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
- Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
- Sing: London Bridge Is Falling Down.
- Read: Ben and the Blocks (level 3).
Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.
Construction theme books
- Ben and the Blocks (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Building with blocks on a rainy day.
- The Big Truck (level 2, free on peabody.kids): A truck and a team.
- Rat's Hut (level 1, free on peabody.kids): A rat and a hut, for building homes.
- The Three Little Pigs (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: three houses built three ways.
Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.
Construction craft: Box building
You need (4): small boxes, tape, crayons, paper windows.
- Tape boxes together into a building.
- Glue or tape on windows.
- Give your building a name: a house, a shop, a tower.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.
Construction song: London Bridge Is Falling Down
