Construction theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A construction theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the construction theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “How tall can we build before it falls?” and sing “london bridge is falling down”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: box building.
  4. Snack: Hamburger Cookies.
  5. Outside: big builders.
  6. Read Ben and the Blocks, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter T picture page.

Construction circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “How tall can we build before it falls?”
  4. Sing: London Bridge Is Falling Down.
  5. Read: Ben and the Blocks (level 3).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

Construction theme books

  • Ben and the Blocks (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Building with blocks on a rainy day.

Construction craft: Box building

You need (4): small boxes, tape, crayons, paper windows.

  1. Tape boxes together into a building.
  2. Glue or tape on windows.
  3. Give your building a name: a house, a shop, a tower.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.

Twos: the picture page only; color it and say the word.

Outside activity: Big builders

Build a ramp from boards or cardboard and roll balls and trucks down it. Make it steeper, then flatter.
