Construction theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities

A construction theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the construction theme with 3 and 4 year olds

  1. Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
  2. Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “How tall can we build before it falls?”, sing “london bridge is falling down”, then Ben and the Blocks.
  3. Centers, with the craft at one table: box building.
  4. Letter T: trace it once, then hunt for T around the room.
  5. Snack: Hamburger Cookies, with children pouring and counting.
  6. Outside: big builders.
  7. Rest, then a longer read-aloud: The Three Little Pigs.

Construction circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “How tall can we build before it falls?”
  4. Sing: London Bridge Is Falling Down.
  5. Read: Ben and the Blocks (level 3).

Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.

Construction theme books

  • Ben and the Blocks (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Building with blocks on a rainy day.

  • Rat's Hut (level 1, free on peabody.kids): A rat and a hut, for building homes.
  • The Three Little Pigs (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: three houses built three ways.

Construction craft: Box building

You need (4): small boxes, tape, crayons, paper windows.

  1. Tape boxes together into a building.
  2. Glue or tape on windows.
  3. Give your building a name: a house, a shop, a tower.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

TtT is for tools. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Threes and fours: trace T and t once, then find T in the room and in the book.

Outside activity: Big builders

Build a ramp from boards or cardboard and roll balls and trucks down it. Make it steeper, then flatter.
