Weather theme for toddlers: a week of activities
A weather theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the weather theme with toddlers
- Arrival and free play on the floor.
- Sing “Rain, Rain, Go Away” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
- Hold and pass something real for the week (sun), and say its name.
- Snack: a toddler-safe version of yogurt parfait (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
- Outside: a short walk looking for rain.
- Read Rain on the Hat on laps, pointing and naming.
- Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.
Weather circle time
- Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
- Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
- Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
- Sing: Rain, Rain, Go Away.
- Read: Rain on the Hat (level 3).
Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.
Weather theme books
- Rain on the Hat (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Rain falling on a hat, in a pattern.
- Pit, Pat (level 0, free on peabody.kids): The sound of rain, for little ones to tap along.
- Ben and the Blocks (level 3, free on peabody.kids): What to do on a rainy day indoors.
- Fay and the Kite (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: a windy day and a kite.
Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.
Weather craft: Weather wheel
You need (4): paper plate, crayons, a paper arrow, a paper fastener (grown-up pushes it in).
- Draw sun, rain, wind and cloud in four parts of the plate.
- A grown-up fixes the arrow in the middle.
- Turn the arrow to today's weather each morning.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.
