Weather theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities

A weather theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the weather theme with 3 and 4 year olds

  1. Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
  2. Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “What is the weather like today? How do you know?”, sing “rain, rain, go away”, then Rain on the Hat.
  3. Centers, with the craft at one table: weather wheel.
  4. Letter W: trace it once, then hunt for W around the room.
  5. Snack: Yogurt Parfait, with children pouring and counting.
  6. Outside: wind check.
  7. Rest, then a longer read-aloud: Fay and the Kite.

Weather circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What is the weather like today? How do you know?”
  4. Sing: Rain, Rain, Go Away.
  5. Read: Rain on the Hat (level 3).

Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.

Weather theme books

  • Rain on the Hat (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Rain falling on a hat, in a pattern.
  • Pit, Pat (level 0, free on peabody.kids): The sound of rain, for little ones to tap along.

  • Fay and the Kite (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: a windy day and a kite.

Weather craft: Weather wheel

You need (4): paper plate, crayons, a paper arrow, a paper fastener (grown-up pushes it in).

  1. Draw sun, rain, wind and cloud in four parts of the plate.
  2. A grown-up fixes the arrow in the middle.
  3. Turn the arrow to today's weather each morning.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Weather song: Rain, Rain, Go Away

The words

Rain, rain, go away, Come again another day.
