Spring theme for toddlers: a week of activities

A spring theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the spring theme with toddlers

  1. Arrival and free play on the floor.
  2. Sing “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
  3. Hold and pass something real for the week (spring), and say its name.
  4. Snack: a toddler-safe version of ladybugs on a log (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
  5. Outside: a short walk looking for bud.
  6. Read Meg and the Seed on laps, pointing and naming.
  7. Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.

Spring circle time

  1. Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
  2. Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
  3. Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
  4. Sing: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.
  5. Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).

Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.

Spring theme books

Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.

Spring craft: Tissue blossom branch

You need (4): brown crayon, paper, pink or white tissue squares, glue stick.

  1. Draw a branch across the paper.
  2. Scrunch tissue squares into little balls.
  3. Glue the blossoms along the branch.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.

Spring song: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

The words

Baa, baa, black sheep, Have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, Three bags full. One for the master, And one for the dame, And one for the little boy Who lives down the lane.

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Spring snack

Ladybugs on a Log from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Letter S activities

SsS is for spring. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Infants and toddlers: skip the trace page; show the picture page and say the word.

Outside activity: Spring spotting

Walk and look for three new things: a bud, a bird, a flower. Point, don't pick.
