Spring theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities

A spring theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the spring theme with 3 and 4 year olds

  1. Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
  2. Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “What is new outside in spring?”, sing “baa, baa, black sheep”, then Meg and the Seed.
  3. Centers, with the craft at one table: tissue blossom branch.
  4. Letter S: trace it once, then hunt for S around the room.
  5. Snack: Ladybugs on a Log, with children pouring and counting.
  6. Outside: spring spotting.
  7. Rest, then a longer read-aloud: Big Egg.

Spring circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What is new outside in spring?”
  4. Sing: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.
  5. Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).

Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.

  2. Scrunch tissue squares into little balls.
  3. Glue the blossoms along the branch.

Spring song: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep

The words

Baa, baa, black sheep, Have you any wool? Yes sir, yes sir, Three bags full. One for the master, And one for the dame, And one for the little boy Who lives down the lane.

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Spring snack

Ladybugs on a Log from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Letter S activities

SsS is for spring. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Threes and fours: trace S and s once, then find S in the room and in the book.

Outside activity: Spring spotting

Walk and look for three new things: a bud, a bird, a flower. Point, don't pick.
