Plant theme for toddlers: a week of activities
A plant theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the plant theme with toddlers
- Arrival and free play on the floor.
- Sing “Lavender's Blue” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
- Hold and pass something real for the week (seed), and say its name.
- Snack: a toddler-safe version of chia pudding (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
- Outside: a short walk looking for soil.
- Read Meg and the Seed on laps, pointing and naming.
- Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.
Plant circle time
- Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
- Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
- Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
- Sing: Lavender's Blue.
- Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).
Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.
Plant theme books
- Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A seed that takes its time.
- The Bean in the Cup (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: the very thing the room is doing this week.
- The Enormous Turnip (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a turnip so big everyone pulls.
- At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Where things grow, in a pattern book.
Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.
Plant craft: Bean in a cup
You need (5): a clear cup, cotton balls or soil, a dried bean (grown-up holds it), water, a name sticker.
- Put the wet cotton or soil in the cup.
- A grown-up pushes the bean in against the side so you can see it.
- Water a little each day and watch for the root.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.
Plant song: Lavender's Blue
The words
Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green; When I am king, dilly dilly, you shall be queen.
Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.
Plant snack
Chia Pudding from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.
Swap: Milk → oat milk.
Letter G activities
GgG is for grow. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).
Infants and toddlers: skip the trace page; show the picture page and say the word.
Outside activity: Grow like a seed
Curl up small as a seed; rain falls, the sun shines, and everyone grows slowly up tall.
