Plant theme for 3 and 4 year olds: a week of activities
A plant theme lesson plan for 3 and 4 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (ten to fifteen minutes, with a child holding the book), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the plant theme with 3 and 4 year olds
- Arrival, sign-in, and a job from the helper chart.
- Circle (ten to fifteen minutes): calendar, “What does a seed need to grow?”, sing “lavender's blue”, then Meg and the Seed.
- Centers, with the craft at one table: bean in a cup.
- Letter G: trace it once, then hunt for G around the room.
- Snack: Chia Pudding, with children pouring and counting.
- Outside: grow like a seed.
- Rest, then a longer read-aloud: The Bean in the Cup.
Plant circle time
- Good morning song, then say each name together.
- Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
- Ask: “What does a seed need to grow?”
- Sing: Lavender's Blue.
- Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).
Threes and fours: ten to fifteen minutes; let a child hold the book.
Plant theme books
- Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A seed that takes its time.
- The Bean in the Cup (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: the very thing the room is doing this week.
- The Enormous Turnip (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a turnip so big everyone pulls.
- At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Where things grow, in a pattern book.
Plant craft: Bean in a cup
You need (5): a clear cup, cotton balls or soil, a dried bean (grown-up holds it), water, a name sticker.
- Put the wet cotton or soil in the cup.
- A grown-up pushes the bean in against the side so you can see it.
- Water a little each day and watch for the root.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Plant song: Lavender's Blue
The words
Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green; When I am king, dilly dilly, you shall be queen.
Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.
Plant snack
Chia Pudding from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.
Swap: Milk → oat milk.
Letter G activities
GgG is for grow. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).
Threes and fours: trace G and g once, then find G in the room and in the book.
Outside activity: Grow like a seed
Curl up small as a seed; rain falls, the sun shines, and everyone grows slowly up tall.
