Farm theme for toddlers: a week of activities

A farm theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the farm theme with toddlers

  1. Arrival and free play on the floor.
  2. Sing “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
  3. Hold and pass something real for the week (farm), and say its name.
  4. Snack: a toddler-safe version of english muffin pizzas (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
  5. Outside: a short walk looking for barn.
  6. Read At the Farm on laps, pointing and naming.
  7. Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.

Farm circle time

  1. Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
  2. Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
  3. Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
  4. Sing: Old MacDonald Had a Farm.
  5. Read: At the Farm (level 3).

Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.

Farm theme books

  • At the Farm (level 3, free on peabody.kids): The farm animals one by one, in a pattern children can say along.
  • Ten Pigs (level 1, free on peabody.kids): Counting pigs to ten, for the math corner.
  • Fox and the Hen (level 1, free on peabody.kids): A hen and a fox who are kind to each other.
  • The Little Red Hen (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: who will help? The hen bakes bread alone.

Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.

Farm craft: Paper-bag barn

You need (5): paper lunch bag, red paint, white paper strips, animal stickers or drawings, glue stick.

  1. Paint the bag red and let it dry.
  2. Glue white strips on as the barn doors.
  3. Put the animals in the barn and name each one.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.

Farm song: Old MacDonald Had a Farm

The words

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O! And on that farm he had a cow, E-I-E-I-O! With a moo-moo here and a moo-moo there, Here a moo, there a moo, Everywhere a moo-moo, Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O!

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Farm snack

English Muffin Pizzas from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Letter F activities

FfF is for farm. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Infants and toddlers: skip the trace page; show the picture page and say the word.

Outside activity: Animal walk

Walk like each farm animal: a hen pecks, a cow plods, a pig rolls, a horse gallops.
