What this worksheet covers
In each problem the digit in the ones place of the first number is at least as large as the digit being taken away, and so is the tens digit. Nothing needs to be traded. Students practice setting out the subtraction in columns, working from the ones, and writing a two-digit answer, which is the whole job at this stage.
Who it is for
Second grade, under Common Core 2.NBT.B.5. Use it before the regrouping sheet, or as a quick success sheet for students who have been struggling with borrowing and need to feel secure again.
Subtracting two-digit numbers where no column borrows · grade 2
A worked example
Take 78 − 34. Ones: 8 − 4 = 4. Tens: 7 − 3 = 4. The answer is 44. Then add 44 + 34 to see that it returns to 78, which shows students that subtraction can be checked with addition.
Mistakes to watch for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger whichever is on top, which gives a wrong answer once borrowing appears later. On these sheets it is hidden because it never matters.
- Starting with the tens column and losing track of the place. Remind students to begin at the ones.
