What this worksheet covers
Without regrouping, each column adds to nine or less: ones with ones, tens with tens, and the answer needs no carrying. Every problem here is built that way, so the sheet isolates the idea of place value in addition. Students are practicing the layout, the order, and the habit of lining up digits, with the carry left for the next sheet.
Who it is for
Second graders meet this under 2.NBT.B.5, which asks for fluent addition within 100 using strategies based on place value. It is the right sheet for the first days of the topic and a good diagnostic for older students who say they know it.
Adding two-digit numbers where no column carries · grade 2
A worked example
Add 43 and 25. Ones: 3 + 5 = 8. Tens: 4 + 2 = 6. The answer is 68. Ask students to say 40 + 20 and 3 + 5 aloud before they write it. Hearing it as tens and ones shows them why the columns line up.
Mistakes to watch for
- Adding the tens first and then writing the answer backward, 86 for 68. Start at the ones, or say the answer aloud as tens then ones.
- Misaligning the columns when copying a problem. Squared paper or a dark line down the middle helps.
