What this worksheet covers
The pairs that make 10 are the most useful facts in early arithmetic. They anchor every later strategy, from adding 8 + 5 by taking 2 to make ten, to regrouping in two-digit addition. Each problem here shows one number and leaves a blank for its partner, and some are written the other way round so that the blank is not always in the same place.
Who it is for
Kindergarten children begin with this: Common Core K.OA.A.4 asks them to find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number from 1 to 9. First graders should have it automatic. A child who is slow on this sheet will be slow on almost everything that follows.

A worked example
For 6 + ___ = 10, show six counters on a ten frame and ask how many empty squares are left. Four. Then write 6 + 4 = 10. Next show 4 + ___ = 10 and ask whether the answer will be the same six, and why.
Mistakes to watch for
- Giving the number that is already shown, for example 4 for 4 + ___ = 10. Cover the blank and read what the sentence says.
- Answering with the total, writing 10 in the blank. Ask what is added to the first number to reach ten.
