What this worksheet covers
Adding three-digit numbers extends two-digit addition by one column, with the chance to carry from the ones to the tens, from the tens to the hundreds, or both. This sheet mixes problems with no carry, one carry and two carries, so students practice choosing what each column needs. The numbers are chosen so that no total is more than 1,000.
Who it is for
Second graders add within 1,000 under Common Core 2.NBT.B.7, and third graders are expected to do it fluently under 3.NBT.A.2. Use it for review in the fall of third grade, or as an assessment sheet at the end of a unit.
Adding three-digit numbers, with and without carrying · grades 2 and 3
A worked example
Add 358 and 267. Ones: 8 + 7 = 15, write 5 carry 1. Tens: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12, write 2 carry 1. Hundreds: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The answer is 625. Estimate first: 360 + 270 is about 630.
Mistakes to watch for
- Carrying into the wrong column or writing both digits in one place. Rule columns with a pencil line before starting.
- Skipping the carried amount in the last column, so the hundreds come out one short. Estimating catches it.
