Top 20 free word search makers for teachers (2026)

Checked October 2026For Teachers, Homeschool and parentsKind Free websitesNo affiliate links, no paid placement. How we chose

One entry, Peabody Teach word search maker, is our own free tool. It is marked Ours and ranked against the same criteria as the others.

Quick answer

Word Search Labs is our number one: its page says it is free with no ads, no watermarks and no registration, and it builds shaped grids, including ones you draw or upload, that students can solve online. Peabody's own maker is second: shapes, a secret message, look-alike words and clues, and a play-on-the-board game with sound, with your words kept in your browser. Super Teacher Worksheets is the quickest for a clean PDF with a solution page. Many makers here load ads, publish your puzzle or cap the free tier.

2. Peabody Teach word search maker

Peabody Teach

  • Ours
  • Best for playing on the projector, secret messages and private lists
  • Free

Type up to 40 words or start from a ready list (Dolch sight words by grade, months, states, 40 topics), then pick a square or one of ten shapes such as a pumpkin, heart or star, a grid from 8 to 25 and three difficulties. Add a secret message that fills the leftover letters, look-alike words for a sort-and-find puzzle, or "word: clue" lines to print clues in the bank. It prints a sheet and an answer key and checks that each word appears exactly once. Play puts the same puzzle on the board: drag or tap to find words, each find plays a note, and the message flies into place at the end. Words stay in your browser.

Free, no sign-in and no ads; Peabody is free through the end of 2026 (as of 2026-10-29).

Watch for No drawing your own shape or uploading a picture, no embedding on a class site, and one capital-letter font (with a lowercase switch). There is no team scoreboard, and a play link carries the words in the address. It is our own tool, so weigh this ranking with that in mind.

Also good

  • TeacherPapers word search maker: Its page says the puzzle is made in your browser with no sign-up, and it offers Class Set and Batch Print and a share link that keeps settings in the address. It sits on a pages.dev address with no named operator, so we left it out of the ranking.

  • Brainator word search generator: Free to try with no sign-up, and the page says its printable PDFs carry no ads and no watermarks; it can draft topic words with AI and make puzzles in other languages.
  • PuzzleGenio: Free with no sign-up, solving on screen with a timer, and PDFs with a key; a header link says 'Upgrade to remove ads', so ads show on the free version.
  • MiniWebtool word search generator: Solving on screen with a confetti message, but the page says three free uses a day and that the site is free because of ads.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently. Our own tool sits where those criteria put it; we built it after studying the others, so read its entry with that in mind.

  1. Free without a credit card. Can a teacher make and print a word search at no cost, and does the maker's own page say where a paid plan starts?
  2. No sign-in to start. Whether the page lets you make, print or share a puzzle at once, or sends you to log in or sign up first.
  3. Ads and where your words go. Whether the page says it has no ads, mentions ads or sells an ad-free plan, and whether the words stay in your browser, go to a server or are published on the site. We also looked for ad code in the page source.
  4. Print quality and an answer key. A clean sheet on Letter or A4, a word bank, and a key you can print or save as a PDF.
  5. Shapes, clues and play. What the puzzle can do beyond a plain square grid: shaped grids, hidden messages, picture or definition clues, and solving on screen.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 29, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

What is the best free word search maker for teachers?
For the most shape options with no ads, Word Search Labs: ready shapes, your own drawn or uploaded shapes, eight directions and online solving, free with no registration according to its page. For a plain PDF with a solution page, Super Teacher Worksheets says unlimited word searches need no membership. Our own maker is second: it adds a secret message, look-alike words and a game for the projector, and keeps your words in your browser.
Can I make a word search with a hidden message?
Puzzel.org does it free: the letters left over once every word is found spell a word or phrase. Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker lists Hidden Message as its own puzzle type, and Teach Starter says to write the message into the words box and mix up the words. Peabody's maker puts your message in the first leftover letters, rings it on the answer key, and on the board flies it into place when the last word is found.
Which word search makers let students solve on screen?
Word Search Labs, Dinogame, Puzzel.org, Edu-Games.org, TheWordSearch.com, Teacher's Corner and JigsawMake say students can play online from a link. Check what the free tier allows: Puzzel.org's free account covers 60 player sessions a month, and TheWordSearch.com keeps your puzzle on its public site for 60 days after the last visit. Peabody's maker plays on the projector or from a play link, with the words carried after the # of the link rather than stored on a server.
Which makers can make a shaped word search, like a heart or a pumpkin?
A to Z Teacher Stuff lists 30 shapes, Word Search Labs has ready shapes and lets you draw your own or upload a picture, and Teacher's Corner offers star, heart and fish. BrightSprout and Puzzel.org list shapes too, but on a paid plan. Peabody's maker has ten ready shapes, from a pumpkin to a cat face, free.
Is it safe to type student names or a class list into a word search maker?
We would use vocabulary words, not names. Word Search Labs says a free Public puzzle is visible in search engines, TheWordSearch.com publishes puzzles on its site and warns not to add personal information, and Puzzle-Maker.com says the words you enter help build a database. 7ESL and Dinogame say the puzzle is made in your browser.
How many words should a word search have?
Super Teacher Worksheets recommends 20 words of 3 to 16 letters, WorksheetWorks suggests 20 to 40, Education.com's layout takes at most 17 and 7ESL caps at 20. Fewer, shorter words with only across and down suit younger children; Super Teacher's Basic level and our Easy level do that.
