Word scramble maker
Type your words and get a printable word scramble: the letters mixed up in boxes, empty boxes to write the word in, an optional word bank and an answer key. Free, no sign-in.
To save a PDF, choose Print, then “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheets print.
8 words scrambled; none is left as its own answer.
How to use it
- Type or paste your words, one per line. A phrase like “polar bear” is scrambled word by word. Add a clue after a colon if you want one: “planet: a world that circles a star”.
- Tick “Give the first letter” to make it easier, “Word bank” for a box of the words to choose from, and “Show my clues” to print your clues under each word.
- Check the preview. A word that cannot be scrambled (one letter, or the same letter twice, like “ee”) is listed under the sheet, never printed as its own answer.
- Press Print for the sheet and the answer key, or “Make another” for a different scramble of the same words.
Ideas for class
- Vocabulary review: scramble the unit’s key terms and put each definition in as a clue.
- Spelling practice that is not a list: this week’s words, scrambled, with the first letter given for students who need the support.
- Early finishers: a scramble of the books or characters from the class read-aloud.
- Bell ringer: five scrambled words on the board as students come in, answers in two minutes.
- Differentiate: the same list with the first letter and a word bank for some students, and neither for others.
- Student-made scrambles: groups scramble words from a chapter and swap sheets.

Questions
Can a scramble be the same as the word?
No. Every scrambled word is checked against the original and mixed again until it differs. A word that cannot be changed is left out and listed, so it never appears as its own answer.
What if two words use the same letters?
The maker tries not to make a scramble that spells another word on your list, so a student is rarely left with two right answers.
How many words can I use?
Up to 40, of up to 20 letters each. Longer lists run onto more pages; the word bank on each page holds that page’s words.
Can I add a hint?
Yes, two ways. “Give the first letter” leaves the first letter in place, and a clue after a colon prints under the word when “Show my clues” is on.
Do you keep my list?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and your last list is remembered on this computer only. Share copies a link that holds the list after the # sign, which our server never receives.
Nothing you do here is sent to us. Names, lists and settings stay in this browser. No sign-in, no ads.
