To save a PDF, choose Print, then “Save as PDF” as the printer. Only the sheets print.

10 words. The test is in a mixed-up order; the teacher’s copy is numbered the same way.

How to use it

  1. Paste your list, one word per line (a column from a spreadsheet or a comma list works too), and give it a title such as “Week 12”.
  2. Choose which sheets to print: the practice sheet, the test (with a teacher’s copy in the same order) and the scramble.
  3. Press Print. Students fold the practice sheet back along the first column so the word is hidden while they write it.
  4. Use “Make a game from this list” to open bingo cards, a word search or flashcards with the same words already typed in.

Ideas for class

  • Monday: send the practice sheet home, and ask students to do a row each night.
  • Friday: read the test aloud from the teacher’s copy. “Mix up the test order” means the words are not read in the order students practiced them.
  • Centers: a scramble at one center, a word search from the link at another, bingo cards for the last ten minutes of the week.
  • Differentiate: paste a shorter list for some students and print their sheets from it, since the sheets look alike.
  • Words with a pattern: put the whole pattern on the list (words with ough, or words that end in -tion) so the practice sheet becomes a pattern sheet.
  • Challenge words: add a few at the end of the list and cross the extra lines off for students who do not need them.

Questions

What is look-say-cover-write-check?

A common way to practice spelling a word: look at it, say it aloud, cover it, write it from memory, then check what you wrote against the word. The practice sheet gives each word two tries, each followed by a check box.

How many words can I use?

Up to 40. The practice sheet holds 10 to a page and the test fits on one page. Bingo needs at least 8 words, and the maker tells you if the list is too short for a game.

Does the test have an answer key?

The teacher’s copy lists the words with the same numbers as the test, so you can read them in order. If you turn on “Mix up the test order”, both are mixed in the same way.

How do the game links work?

Each link opens that maker with your list already typed in, using the part of the address after the # sign. The list never goes to our server. The bingo link makes the biggest card your list can fill, and the word search link picks the smallest grid that holds every word.

Can I use phrases or words with capitals?

Yes. Words are printed as you typed them. In the scramble, a phrase is scrambled word by word. In a word search, spaces and punctuation are left out of the grid.

Is my list private?

Yes. Everything is made in your browser, and your last list is remembered on this computer only.
