All 10 words are in the crossword (12 × 11 squares).

How to use it

  1. Type one word and clue per line, with a colon between them: SNOW: White flakes that fall in winter.
  2. The maker crosses words that share a letter and numbers the squares. Any word that could not be crossed in is listed under the preview.
  3. Not happy with the layout? Press “Make another” for a different one from the same words.
  4. Press Print for the puzzle and the answer key. Turn on the word bank for younger students.

Ideas for class

  • Vocabulary review: write each definition as the clue and let students fill in the word.
  • Fill-in-the-blank clues (“The ______ is the center of a cell”) check that students can use the word, not just recognise it.
  • Have students write the clues: each pair makes up a crossword for the class to solve.
  • Use a word bank for grades 1–3 and leave it off for grades 5 and up.
  • Keep the answer key page for a quick check, or give it to a partner to mark.

Questions

Why were some words left out?

A word can only go in if it shares a letter with a word already placed. A word with no shared letters is listed as not placed; change it for another, or add a word that crosses it.

How do I write the clues?

After the word, type a colon, a bar or a comma and then the clue. The clue can be a definition, a sentence with a blank, or a short question.

How many words fit?

Up to 30 on a sheet. Ten to fourteen words make the best-looking puzzle for most classes.

Can I save it as a PDF?

Choose Print, then “Save as PDF” as the printer. Each page can also be saved as a PNG under its preview.

Is my list private?

Yes. The crossword is made in your browser. Nothing is sent to us, and Share puts the list after the # in the link, which our server never receives.

Nothing you do here is sent to us. Names, lists and settings stay in this browser. No sign-in, no ads.
