Quick answer

Wayground is our number one for a teacher: its plans page says it is free for every teacher, includes flashcards and AI card building, and caps free use at 20 stored activities and 100 students. For self-study, Knowt and Brainscape have real free tiers, and Anki is free on computers and Android. We could not read Quizlet's own pages when we checked, so it is not ranked.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently.

  1. A free tier you can really use. Can you make and study sets at no cost, and does the maker say plainly what the free tier leaves out?
  2. AI features and what they cost. Whether the official page describes AI card making, and which parts need a paid plan.
  3. Classroom fit. Whether a teacher can share sets with a class or see who studied, or whether the tool is built for one learner.
  4. Spaced repetition. Whether the page says cards come back on a schedule based on what you remember.
  5. Accounts, ads and ease of use. What a student has to sign up with, whether ads are mentioned, and how simple it is for a non-technical teacher.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 27, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

Why is Quizlet not on the list?
We could not open Quizlet's official pages when we checked, so we could not confirm its current free limits or AI features and did not rank it. Check its own pricing page. Knowt says you can import existing Quizlet sets for free.
Which of these use spaced repetition?
Anki schedules each review for when you are most likely to forget the card. Brainscape, Knowt, RemNote, Mochi and Flippity also describe spaced repetition on their own pages.
Are the AI flashcard features free?
Partly. Wayground's free teacher plan includes AI features, Brainscape's free tier lets you make hundreds of AI cards, Knowt's FAQ says AI practice tests are free, and RemNote's free plan has 250 AI credits a month. Unlimited or fuller AI is on paid plans.
What is the best option for a whole class?
Wayground is the one here built around a teacher sharing cards and seeing which students studied. Wordwall and StudyStack can work for class games and shared sets. Anki, Mochi and RemNote are aimed at one learner.
