What should a substitute teacher wear?

Dress like the school's teachers on a work day: neat and professional. Dysart Unified's handbook says professional dress helps build respect with students. Wicomico County's handbook lists halter tops, tank tops, miniskirts, cut-offs and t-shirts with ads or slogans as not appropriate, and says the administrator decides case by case.

Whitko Community Schools in Indiana asks staff to be clean and neat, to dress in a way that fits their job, and to avoid hair or clothing that disrupts learning or causes a safety hazard. None of these handbooks hands subs a uniform. They expect judgment.

The room matters too. A gym class, a kindergarten floor, or a shop room may call for flat shoes and clothes you can kneel in. When you are not sure, ask the sub office or the school office what teachers there usually wear.

Bring the badge or ID the district gives you and wear it where it can be seen all day. Some districts also have a dress code in their employee policy, so it is worth reading once.
