Can a substitute grade work or assign homework?

Usually only what the plan asks for. Whitko Community Schools lists grading, if needed, among a sub's duties, and San Ramon Valley Unified tells subs not to vary from the lesson plan. So grade or assign homework when the teacher's plan says to, and leave the rest for the teacher.

Teachers do expect some grading. Warren Township's form for teachers to rate a sub asks whether the sub graded the papers the teacher expected. If the plan says to check work, do it with the answer key left for you and say in your note what you marked.

Long-term jobs change this. Dysart Unified says a sub covering a vacant position is expected to prepare lesson plans, grade, and attend staff meetings like a contracted teacher. Wicomico County says a sub in a job longer than two days makes daily plans. Ask the principal what you own.

Homework that is not in the plan can confuse families and the teacher. If you think the class needs more practice, write the idea in your note and let the teacher decide.
