How early should a substitute arrive?
Plan on 15 to 30 minutes before classes start, but your district sets the number. Warren Township Schools in New Jersey asks subs to arrive at least 15 minutes before classes begin. San Ramon Valley Unified in California says at least 20 minutes before the job. Dysart Unified in Arizona says 30 minutes before class starts.

The time goes fast. In these handbooks it covers signing in at the office, getting a badge and keys, reading the plans, finding the materials, and learning the emergency routes before students walk in. Warren even prints a sub arrival time for each of its schools.
If you took a job late, or you are running behind, call the school. San Ramon Valley asks a late sub to phone the office manager with an arrival time, and Wicomico County asks subs to tell the school right away.
Your own district's handbook or sub office has the real rule. Check it before your first job, and check whether the time is counted from the bell or from the start of the job.
