How do subs find jobs each day?

Most districts post absences in an online absence-management system, and subs pick jobs there on the website, an app, or an automated phone call. Oakland Unified in California says its sub jobs are listed only in Frontline Absence. Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia gives its subs a Red Rover login. Your district will tell you which one it uses.

When a teacher reports an absence, the job appears in the system. Some jobs go first to a teacher's preferred subs, then open to everyone. Good jobs can go fast, so many subs check early in the morning and the evening before, and turn on alerts.

You usually set your own preferences in the system, such as which schools you will work at, which days you are free, and when it may call you. Keep your list wide at first; a narrow list can hide jobs you would have taken.

Ask your district's sub office for its training guide, the hours it posts and calls, how late you may cancel, and what happens if you take a job and then cannot go. When you accept, open the job details for the start time, room and any notes.
