Winter theme for toddlers: a week of activities
A winter theme lesson plan for toddlers: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (two or three minutes, on laps), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.
A day of the winter theme with toddlers
- Arrival and free play on the floor.
- Sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” with actions; repeat it while you change and feed.
- Hold and pass something real for the week (snow), and say its name.
- Snack: a toddler-safe version of frozen yogurt bark (check the recipe's lines for under-4s).
- Outside: a short walk looking for ice.
- Read Dad Naps on laps, pointing and naming.
- Nap, then the song once more at pick-up.
Winter circle time
- Hello song: sing hello to each child by name.
- Look out of the window together: sun, rain or clouds?
- Show the theme: hold up something real and name it.
- Sing: Mary Had a Little Lamb.
- Read: Lou and the Snow Dad (read aloud).
Infants and toddlers: two or three minutes, on laps.
Winter theme books
- Lou and the Snow Dad (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud: building a snow dad.
- Pim and the Mitten (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a lost mitten and the animals who find it.
- Where Is Ned's Hat? (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a hat lost on a cold day.
- Dad Naps (level 0, free on peabody.kids): A cozy day inside, for the twos.
Infants and toddlers: one book, read every day; point and name.
Winter craft: Cotton-ball snowman
You need (5): blue card, cotton balls, glue stick, a paper hat and scarf, crayons.
- Glue cotton balls in three circles, small on top.
- Glue on the hat and the scarf.
- Draw the face and the buttons.
With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.
Infants and toddlers: let them touch and hold the materials while you make it; nothing small enough to swallow.
Winter song: Mary Had a Little Lamb
The words
Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow; And everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go. It followed her to school one day, Which was against the rule; It made the children laugh and play To see a lamb at school.
Sarah Josepha Hale, 1830; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.
