Water theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A water theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the water theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “Will it float or sink?” and sing “jack and jill”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: float or sink chart.
  4. Snack: Fruit Kabobs.
  5. Outside: paint with water.
  6. Read Fish in a Dish, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter W picture page.

Water circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “Will it float or sink?”
  4. Sing: Jack and Jill.
  5. Read: Fish in a Dish (level 2).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

You need (4): card with two columns, crayons, a tub of water, small toys to test.

  1. Guess: will it float or sink?
  2. Drop it in the water and watch.
  3. Draw it on the right side of the chart.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.

The words

Twos: the picture page only; color it and say the word.

Outside activity: Paint with water

Give everyone a cup of water and a big brush. Paint the fence or the path and watch it dry.
