Space theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A space theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the space theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “What do you see in the sky at night?” and sing “twinkle, twinkle, little star”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: star sky.
  4. Snack: Frozen Yogurt Bark.
  5. Outside: rocket launch.
  6. Read Not Yet, Ted, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter S picture page.

Space circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What do you see in the sky at night?”
  4. Sing: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
  5. Read: Not Yet, Ted (level 3).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

Space theme books

  • Not Yet, Ted (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Bedtime and the night sky.
  • The Sun Is a Star (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: the true story that the sun is a star.
  • The Moon Follows Me (read aloud, level 6): A read-aloud: a moon that seems to follow you home.

Space craft: Star sky

You need (3): dark blue or black paper, star stickers, white crayon.

  1. Stick stars all over the paper.
  2. Draw a moon with the white crayon.
  3. Count the stars in your sky.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.

Space snack

Frozen Yogurt Bark from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Swap: Yogurt → oat yogurt.

Letter S activities

SsS is for star. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Twos: the picture page only; color it and say the word.

Outside activity: Rocket launch

Crouch low, count down from five together and blast off with a big jump.
