Color Mixing theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A color mixing theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the color mixing theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “What happens when blue and yellow mix?” and sing “little boy blue”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: bag mixing.
  4. Snack: Rainbow Fruit Cup.
  5. Outside: color water.
  6. Read The Red Hat, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter C picture page.

Color Mixing circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What happens when blue and yellow mix?”
  4. Sing: Little Boy Blue.
  5. Read: The Red Hat (level 3).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

Color Mixing theme books

  • The Red Hat (level 3, free on peabody.kids): A red hat and the colors around it.

  • The Red Bus (level 1, free on peabody.kids): Red, and what it sits next to.
  • Red, Red, Red (read aloud, level 4): A read-aloud pattern book about one color.

Color Mixing craft: Bag mixing

You need (3): a zip bag, two colors of washable paint, tape.

  1. A grown-up drops in two colors and tapes the bag shut.
  2. Squish the bag until the colors mix.
  3. Name the new color.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.
