Flower theme for 2 year olds: a week of activities

A flower theme lesson plan for 2 year olds: what a day looks like, then the week's circle time (about five minutes, standing up for the song), books, craft, song, snack, letter and outside time, each with what changes at this age.

A day of the flower theme with 2 year olds

  1. Arrival, hands washed, free play.
  2. Circle (about five minutes): hello song, then “What does a flower need to grow?” and sing “mary, mary, quite contrary”.
  3. Craft with a grown-up pouring and cutting: cupcake-liner flower.
  4. Snack: Yogurt Parfait.
  5. Outside: flower count.
  6. Read Meg and the Seed, the same book again tomorrow.
  7. Rest, then color the letter F picture page.

Flower circle time

  1. Good morning song, then say each name together.
  2. Calendar: the day, the date and the weather.
  3. Ask: “What does a flower need to grow?”
  4. Sing: Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary.
  5. Read: Meg and the Seed (level 3).

Twos: about five minutes; stand up for the song.

Flower theme books

  • Meg and the Seed (level 3, free on peabody.kids): From a seed to something growing.
  • The Red Hat (level 3, free on peabody.kids): Colors all around, for the color-and-petal talk.
  • The Bean in the Cup (read aloud, level 5): A read-aloud: a bean growing in a cup.

Flower craft: Cupcake-liner flower

You need (5): paper cupcake liners, green paper stem, card, glue stick, crayons.

  1. Glue the stem onto the card.
  2. Glue a liner on top as the flower.
  3. Draw the roots under the ground.

With a grown-up. No heat, nothing hot.

Twos: a grown-up pours the paint and holds the glue.

Flower song: Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary

The words

Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row.

Traditional; public domain. From Top 52 nursery rhymes with lyrics.

Flower snack

Yogurt Parfait from the Peabody Kitchen: picture steps, allergy swaps and safety lines on the recipe.

Swap: Yogurt → oat yogurt.

Letter F activities

FfF is for flower. Print the two pages (a trace page and a color page).

Twos: the picture page only; color it and say the word.
