The daily report slip: what to write in 20 seconds

Checked October 30, 2026

Tick as the day happens, not at 5:25 pm: meals or bottles at the table, naps and diapers or the potty when they happen, mood after lunch, and one line on what the child did. End with one thing to ask about at home and anything the family needs to bring. Medication goes in your program's own log, not on the slip.

Fill it in as you go

Keep the slips on a clipboard where the thing happens: by the changing table, at the lunch table, by the cots. A tick at the moment takes two seconds; remembering twelve children's lunches at pickup takes twenty minutes.

What goes on each slip

  • Infant: bottles, food, naps, diapers, mood, what to bring.
  • Toddler: meals, nap, diaper or potty, mood, today we, what to bring.
  • Preschool: lunch, rest, potty, today we, ask me about, what to bring, plus the week's theme and book.

The daily slip maker prints four to a page in each version.

Why there is no medicine line

A medication record is your program's own form, under your licensing rules. Every slip says “Medication: see our log” so a family knows where to look, and nothing about a dose is written on a slip that can be lost in a backpack.
