Days until Halloween

A big countdown to Halloween, October 31, for the classroom projector. It works out the days from today by itself, every year.

Counting…

Counting down in this computer's time zone. Count to a different date.

How to use it

  1. The countdown is already set to Halloween and shows the days from today. Nothing to type.
  2. Press F to fill the screen for the projector. It updates itself at midnight.
  3. To count to a different date, such as the last day of school, use the countdown page and pick your own.

Ideas for class

  • Post the countdown on the board and let students guess how many weekdays are left before they check the small print under the number.
  • Use the number as a daily math problem: if there are 14 days left today, how many will there be a week from now?
  • Turn the days to go into a bar graph that grows shorter each morning.
  • Run a class vote on costume rules or the party plan and put the countdown beside the results.
  • Have students write one sentence each day about what they want to do on October 31, and compare the first and last entries.
  • Pair it with a story or poem each day in the last week so the count has something to look forward to.

Questions

What date is Halloween?

Halloween is October 31 every year, so this page counts to the next October 31 on or after today. The day count changes at midnight in your computer's time zone.

Is the countdown right in other countries?

The date is the same everywhere (October 31), but whether your school marks the day differs. If your school holds a party on another day, use the countdown page and pick that date instead.

Does it count weekends?

The big number counts every calendar day. Under it, the page also shows the weekdays (Monday to Friday) left, which is the number of school days if there are no holidays in between. Your own school calendar is the final word on that.
