Stopwatch

A big stopwatch with laps for the projector, a Class Race with a stopwatch for every team, Guess the Time, and a class record to beat. Space starts and stops it, and it never drifts.

Ready

Keys: Space start or stop · L lap · R reset (twice after 30 seconds) · M sound · F full screen

How to use it

  1. Press Start (or Space). Turn on the 3, 2, 1 count-in for a proper start. Press Lap (or L) as each student, team or step finishes: each lap plays the next note of a tune, and the table marks the fastest and slowest.
  2. To race the class's own best, type a challenge such as Line up quietly and choose Fastest wins or Longest wins. A track shows the record's flag; beat it and the screen says New record.
  3. For several teams, choose Class race: name 2 to 8 lanes, press Space to start them all, and press each lane's number as it finishes. U undoes a mis-tap, and a podium rises when the last lane is in.

Ideas for class

  • Line up, pack up, walk to the carpet: name the challenge once and the stopwatch keeps the class record in this browser, so you can race it every day.
  • Run a relay or a math-facts race with Class race: one lane per team, keys 1 to 8 to stop them, and a podium in the order they really finished.
  • Play Guess the Time: the digits vanish, each child or team presses when they think 10 seconds are up, and the closest guess wins.
  • Time silent reading stamina with Longest wins: when the class passes its record the screen celebrates and keeps counting.
  • Time each step of a science experiment with laps, then download the CSV and graph it.
  • Pick the 0:07 digits (no hundredths) for young classes, so the numbers are easy to read.
  • Time each speaker in a presentation with a lap, and copy the laps into your notes.
  • Turn on the count-in for PE: three ticks and a higher go note give everyone the same start.

Questions

Is the stopwatch accurate?

It reads the computer's clock when you start and again whenever it redraws, so it does not lose time if the browser is busy or the tab is in the background. It shows hundredths of a second, but button presses and screens are not that precise, so treat the last digit as a guide. You can switch to tenths or whole seconds.

Are the laps saved?

Yes, in this browser. The time and the laps survive a reload or a closed tab, and a stopwatch that was running keeps counting. Records for named challenges are kept too. Nothing is sent anywhere. Use Copy laps or Download CSV to keep them somewhere else, and Reset to clear them.

How do I time several teams at once?

Choose Class race. Name 2 to 8 lanes, press Space to start them all together, and press each lane's number (1 to 8) or its Finish button as it finishes. Each lane freezes with its place and its gap to the winner, and a podium rises in the real finishing order. Times within 0.15 seconds of each other share a place, because hand timing cannot separate them.

How does Beat the Record work?

Type a name for the challenge, such as Line up quietly, and choose Fastest wins or Longest wins. The best time is kept in this browser with the last five tries. While the stopwatch runs, a track shows how close the class is to the record's flag. Passing the flag never shows a failure colour; the record belongs to the class, not to a child.

Does it make sounds?

Only after you press something on the page: a soft click at start and stop, a 3, 2, 1 count-in if you turn it on, a rising note for each lap so a relay sounds like a tune, and a fanfare for a podium or a new record. M turns sound off and the volume button picks Soft, Room or Hall. There are no sound files; the notes are made in the browser.

What if I press R by accident?

Once a run is past 30 seconds, Reset asks first: press R again (or Yes, reset) within five seconds to clear it, or Esc to keep it. In a race, U undoes the last finish.

Does it work full screen?

Yes. Press F and the digits fill the screen; move the mouse to bring the buttons back. While it runs, the screen is kept awake where the browser allows it, and the browser tab shows the time, so you can glance at it from another tab.
