Rounding: 20 problems a sheet, 3 versions that do not repeat each other where the numbers allow.

How to use it

  1. Look at the sheet: it is a real, printable sheet. Switch between Sheet A, B and C, or press New numbers (N) for a fresh set.
  2. Change how many problems, how many versions, and whether the key prints. Settings stay in this browser; Share copies a link that rebuilds the same sheets.
  3. Press Print sheet A and key, or Print all. The answer key prints on its own page, so you can keep it back.

Ideas for class

  • Draw a number line from 40 to 50 on the board and mark the halfway point at 45. Place each number on it before deciding.
  • Ask students to circle the digit in the tens place and underline the digit to its right before they round.
  • Practice with 98, 99, and 96 together, so students meet the case that rounds up to a hundred.

Questions

Why does 45 round up?

It is exactly halfway between 40 and 50, so either could be chosen. The standard convention taught in US schools is to round up, so the key does too.

Can I include hundreds?

Yes. The rounding to the nearest hundred sheet covers three-digit numbers, and the maker also has a version that mixes tens and hundreds.

Are the answer keys checked?

Each answer is worked out by the code that wrote the problem, and our tests recompute every answer a second way and compare. Please still look over the key before you grade a class set.

What this worksheet covers

Rounding to the nearest ten asks which multiple of ten a number is closest to. The numbers on this sheet are two-digit numbers that are not already multiples of ten, so every question needs a decision. A number ending in 5 rounds up, which is the convention this sheet follows, and answers such as 100 appear for numbers like 98.

Who it is for

Third grade, under 3.NBT.A.1, which asks students to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 using place value. It follows a lesson on number lines and comes before rounding to hundreds.

A worked example

Round 47. It sits between 40 and 50, and 7 ones is more than half of a ten, so it is closer to 50. Round 43 and it is closer to 40. For 45, exactly in the middle, we agree to round up to 50.

Mistakes to watch for

  • Rounding the tens digit down always, so 47 becomes 40. Ask which ten is nearer.
  • Not knowing what to do with a 5. Teach the rule once, clearly, and display it on the wall.
