What this worksheet covers
To round to the nearest hundred, a student looks at the tens digit: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down. This sheet gives three-digit numbers that are not already multiples of 100, so every problem needs a decision, and numbers such as 981 round up to 1,000, which crosses into the next place and surprises many students.
Who it is for
Third grade, under Common Core 3.NBT.A.1. Use it after rounding to the nearest ten, and before the four-digit and larger numbers in fourth grade, which add more places to choose between.

A worked example
Round 792. The tens digit is 9, so round up: the hundreds digit goes from 7 to 8 and the rest become zeros, so 800. Round 981 and the hundreds digit goes from 9 to 10, so the answer is 1,000.
Mistakes to watch for
- Looking at the ones digit instead of the tens. Underline the digit to the right of the hundreds place first.
- Writing 900 for 981 by forgetting that 9 hundreds rounds up to 10 hundreds. A number line shows the difference.
