What this worksheet covers
In every number on this sheet the digits are all different, so a question such as In 842, the value of the digit 4 is ____ has one answer: 40. Students must say not just which place a digit is in but what it is worth, which is the step between knowing place names and being able to write expanded form or regroup in addition.
Who it is for
Second grade, under Common Core 2.NBT.A.1, and a third-grade review. It also makes a quick diagnostic: a student who answers 4 instead of 40 has not yet understood that position changes value.
Finding the value of a digit in a three-digit number · grades 2 and 3
A worked example
In 842 the 8 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 800. The 4 is in the tens place and is worth 40. The 2 is in the ones place and is worth 2. Add them to get 842 again.
Mistakes to watch for
- Writing the digit itself as its value, so 4 for the 4 in 842. Ask: how many tens are there?
- Confusing the place name with the value, answering tens instead of 40. Model both sentences aloud.
