Top 20 free online stopwatch websites for the classroom (2026)

Checked October 2026For Teachers, Homeschool and parentsKind Free websitesNo affiliate links, no paid placement. How we chose

One entry, Peabody Teach Stopwatch, is our own free tool. It is marked Ours and ranked against the same criteria as the others.

Quick answer

Polytimer is our number one: its page says free, no sign-up and no ads, and it runs unlimited named stopwatches side by side with lap comparisons and CSV export. Peabody's own stopwatch is second on the same criteria: free with no ads, it races up to 8 named lanes to a podium in the real finishing order and keeps a class record to beat. Visual Timer is the pick for long relays, with Start All, a one-at-a-time mode and number keys, though it calls itself ad-light. For one plain count-up, WebWork, stopwatch-online.com and EasyTimer.app all say they show no ads.

  • Free

A browser timer app whose page describes a stopwatch with start and pause, reset and lap controls, timed to the millisecond. You can add unlimited named, colour-coded stopwatches and countdown timers in a grid, and each runs on its own. Every lap shows cumulative time, the split and a comparison to the average, the best and slowest laps are highlighted, and laps export to CSV. Any timer can fill the screen.

2. Peabody Teach Stopwatch

Peabody Teach

  • Ours
  • Best for class races, relays and beating the class's own record
  • Free

Four tools on one free page. The stopwatch counts from the clock, so it cannot drift; each lap plays the next note of a tune, the fastest and slowest are marked, and the time and laps survive a reload and download as CSV. Class Race gives 2 to 8 named lanes a Start all with a 3, 2, 1 count-in, keys 1 to 8 to stop each lane, an undo for a mis-tap, ties called inside 0.15 seconds, and a podium in the real finishing order. Guess the Time hides the digits and scores each guess early or late, and Beat the Record keeps the class's best for a named routine. Big digits, 64-pixel buttons, keys listed, full screen, no ads.

Free, no sign-in and no ads; Peabody is free through the end of 2026 (as of 2026-10-29).

Watch for Eight lanes at most, where Polytimer and Visual Timer run as many as you like; no comparison of laps to the average, no labels on single laps, and results stay in one browser with no sync between devices.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently. Our own tool sits where those criteria put it; we built it after studying the others, so read its entry with that in mind.

  1. Free, no sign-in. A teacher can open it and start timing with no account and no card, so it works on a school laptop in the next minute.
  2. No ads on the projector. We say what each page states about ads, since an ad on the big screen distracts the whole class; 'ad-light' and 'free because of ads' count as ads.
  3. Laps that help. Lap and split times with the fastest and slowest marked, so a class can see what changed from one try to the next.
  4. Several stopwatches at once. Named stopwatches side by side, with Start All, so one teacher can time a relay, a station rotation or a row of students.
  5. Keeping the results. Export, copy, or saving the time and laps across a reload, so the numbers survive until you write them on the board.
  6. Ready for the projector. Big digits, a full-screen view and keyboard keys, so you can run it from across the room.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 29, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

Which free online stopwatch has no ads?
On the pages we read, Polytimer says 'No ads, ever', WebWork says no sign-up, no ads and no paywall, stopwatch-online.com says no ads on the timer face, and EasyTimer.app says without signup or ads. Peabody's own stopwatch carries none. Several well-known sites, including timeanddate, Toy Theater and Online-Stopwatch.com, show ads.
Can I time several students at once with a free stopwatch?
Yes. Polytimer, Visual Timer's Multi Stopwatch, Time to Decimal and Online-Timers all run several named stopwatches on one page, and Visual Timer adds Start All and a one-at-a-time mode for relays. Peabody's Class Race starts up to 8 named lanes together and shows the real finishing order on a podium. A plain single stopwatch can also do it by marking a lap as each student finishes.
How accurate is an online stopwatch?
Most subtract two readings of the computer's clock, so a busy or sleeping tab does not make them lose time, and MiniWebtool, Stopwatch.net, CleanStopwatch and EasyTimer.app say theirs work that way. The bigger error is the person pressing the button, so treat the hundredths digit as a guide. EasyTimer.app says plainly that it is not a certified scientific instrument.
Will a stopwatch keep my laps if I close the tab?
Only some do. WebWork, stopwatch-online.com and vClock say they save the time and laps in your browser, and Peabody's does too; OnlineClock.net says laps are lost on a refresh. If it matters, copy or export the laps before you leave the page.
What is the difference between a lap and a split?
A lap time is the time since the previous lap; a split is the running total since the start. Most stopwatches here show both: Calculate.co.nz lists each lap's time and total split, and WebWork shows the split and running total for every lap.
Does Peabody's stopwatch store or send anything?
It stores but never sends. The time, the laps, a race in progress and the class records are kept in your own browser, so they survive a reload, and nothing is sent to Peabody or anyone else. There is no sign-in and no ad, and Peabody is free through the end of 2026. Copy or Download CSV keeps a copy elsewhere.
