Quick answer

Peabody Teach's task card maker is our number one: it builds numbered cards from math facts, word meanings, a reading passage or your own list, 4 or 8 to a page with a recording sheet and an answer key, plus an on-screen self-check, with no account. 1. Peabody Teach task card maker

Peabody Teach

  • Ours
  • Best for a printed center and a self-check in a minute
  • Free

Numbered task cards with three answer choices from math facts, word meanings, a reading passage's questions or your own list (a question, a colon, the answer), 4 or 8 to a page, with a recording sheet and an answer key. The same deck runs as an on-screen self-check one card at a time, showing right or wrong at once with no name, no score saved and nothing sent. A link carries the deck to another computer.

Free, no sign-in and no ads; Peabody is free through the end of 2026 (as of 2026-10-31).

Watch for Every card is a three-choice question, so there are no open-ended, picture-sorting or drawing tasks, and the look is plain rather than decorated.

2. Boom Learning

Boom Learning

  • Best for digital self-checking decks
  • Free plan, paid upgrades

Digital, self-checking task card decks that you buy from the Boom Store or make yourself, the pricing page says. Its FastPlay help article says student accounts or a login are not required to play a deck by a Fast Pin, and that FastPlay does not collect individual student data or make reports.

The free part: The unpaid tier gives FastPlay pins good for 5 days that record no student progress; its help center says more decks, classrooms or students need a paid plan.

The unpaid tier is free; the pricing page shows paid prices as images we could not read (as of 2026-10-31).

Watch for Free pins expire after 5 days and keep no results, and the help center does not say how many decks you can make for free.

3. Storyboard That task card templates

Storyboard That

  • Best for decorated cards you design yourself
  • Free plan, paid upgrades

Free task card templates you open in the Storyboard Creator and edit, then print, download as a PDF or assign digitally. Cards are usually half or quarter sheets, and a grid option splits a page yourself. The page says to copy a template to your account to save it.

The free part: The pricing page lists 2 storyboards a week and only a 3-cell option on the free plan; some features show Upgrade to access.

Free plan; Premium Teacher is billed monthly with the first month for $1, and the pricing page did not show the full price (as of 2026-10-31).

Watch for Two storyboards a week on the free plan, and you write every card and any answer key yourself.

4. Slidesgo task card templates

Slidesgo

  • Best for an editable Google Slides design
  • Free plan, paid upgrades

Free task card slide decks, such as Reading Skills Task Cards, that the page says are 100% editable in Google Slides, PowerPoint and Canva. You type your own tasks into the designed cards and print or project them.

The free part: 3 template downloads a month, and free users must keep the Slidesgo credits slide.

Free plan; Premium is $35.99 billed annually (as of 2026-10-31).

Watch for Three downloads a month on the free plan, and a template is a design only: no recording sheet or answer key is made for you.

How we chose

We weighed these, most important first. The order is our judgement against them, not a score or a vote, and a different teacher could reasonably order it differently. Our own tool sits where those criteria put it; we built it after studying the others, so read its entry with that in mind.

  1. Free to make and print. Whether you can make or download cards and print them for nothing, and where the free plan stops: downloads a month, decks, or editable files.
  2. Ready for a center. Cards per page, cut lines and numbers, a recording sheet and an answer key, so a set is ready to cut and use.
  3. Your own questions. Whether you can put your own questions on the cards rather than only use a fixed set.
  4. Self-checking without student accounts. Whether students can check answers on a screen, and whether that needs a student login or records who played.
  5. Sign-up and licence. Whether you must make an account to download, and what the licence lets you do with the cards.

We took no money, free products or affiliate commissions for any place on this list, and no link here carries a tracking code. Every fact was read on the maker’s own page on October 31, 2026; prices carry that date because they change. See how we choose and the ad-free promise.

Questions

What are task cards?
Small cards with one question or task each, used at centers, for Scoot games and as early-finisher work. Students write answers on a recording sheet by card number, and a key lets you or the student check them.
Do students need accounts for self-checking cards?
Not for the two ranked here. Peabody's self-check runs in the browser with no name and nothing saved, and Boom Learning's help center says FastPlay needs no student account or login but keeps no results.
How do I make task cards in Google Slides?
Start from an editable template such as Slidesgo's, type one task on each card, and print several slides to a page. Make your own recording sheet and key. A maker like Peabody's builds the cards, the sheet and the key together.
Where can I find whole worksheets instead?
