Rocket timer v0.2.0

A free countdown where a rocket flies from the Earth to the Moon as the time runs, past twinkling stars, and lands with a flag at zero. A space-themed way to see time pass.

Ready

5:00

Keys: Space start or pause · R reset · ← → 30 seconds · 1–6 the presets · M sound · F full screen

How to use it

  1. Pick a length or type your own with Custom.
  2. Press Start. The rocket lifts off from the Earth and follows its dotted path across the sky.
  3. At zero it lands on the Moon and plants a flag, the chime plays and paper confetti falls. Press Reset to fly again.

Ideas for class

  • Use it for a space unit: launch the rocket at the start of a task and land it when the work is done.
  • Ask young children to say where the rocket is: just leaving the Earth, halfway, or nearly at the Moon.
  • Count down out loud with the class in the last ten seconds, when the screen beats in time.
  • Use it for a tidy-up mission: everything put away before the rocket lands.
  • Give each group one flight to finish a challenge, and let the flag on the Moon mean the round is over.
  • Turn it into a fraction question: if the rocket is a quarter of the way along its path, how much time has gone?

Questions

How does the rocket show the time?

The rocket's place on its path is the fraction of the time that has gone: halfway along the dotted line means half the time has passed. The dots behind it light up as it flies, and it lands on the Moon at exactly zero.

What happens at zero on the rocket timer?

The rocket lands on the Moon, a flag goes up, the chime plays and paper confetti falls. Press M before you start if you want it without the chime; the rocket still lands.

Can I use the rocket in the class Board?

Yes. The Board's timer widget offers the Rocket style too, in a smaller size and without the confetti, so it does not cover the other widgets.
