High school sub plans: PE and health
One PE and health plan for every period of a high school day, written for a sub with no PE and health background: five minutes to settle, then “A week of moving, for health” with paper and pencils (in a classroom), a backup if it runs short, and the last five minutes. Four things a sub never does in this room are on the plan, and the timetable runs 7 periods of 50 minutes.
Checked October 31, 2026. Written for a sub with no specialist skill: everything works on paper, with no equipment. Print it, or save it as a PDF from the generator.

The lesson, every period
PE and health: a week of moving, for health
- First 5 minutes, settle. Say who you are and that you're covering PE and health today. Meet the class where the school says and take attendance from the roster or the squad lines. Say the plan and the one rule: everything today is no-contact, each person in their own space.
- The main part, about 35 minutes. A week of moving, for health: Students plan a week of being active: three activities they enjoy, when each would fit, and what usually gets in the way. Then they add sleep: what time they would go to bed for eight to ten hours, and one change that would help. Pairs swap and suggest one idea. The plans go home with the students; nobody hands in anything about their own health. You need: paper and pencils (in a classroom).
- If it runs short, the room changes or the class needs something calmer: Explain a sport on paper: Groups of four write the rules of a sport they know as if for someone who has never seen it: the aim, the scoring and three rules. Another group reads them and finds one thing missing. You need: paper and pencils.
- Last 5 minutes: Back to the locker rooms on the school's timing, with time to change, and a drink of water if the school allows it.
- No contact games of any kind, and nothing where students chase, catch or hold one another.
- No weight room, climbing wall, ropes, trampolines or pool, and nothing from the equipment room: today needs none of it.
- No fitness tests or timed runs for a grade; they belong to the teacher.
- Never go into a locker room alone. If there is a problem in there, call the office.
Subbing high school
High school runs like middle school, a period at a time, with older students who will test whether the plan is real. Say the plan, the task and when it is due in the first two minutes, and hold to it calmly. Many will work alone if the task is clear.
- Write the task and what is due by the end of the period on the board before the bell.
- Phones follow the school's own rule; ask the office what it is before first period.
- If a class says the teacher lets them, follow the plan and leave it for the teacher to decide.
